Air chargeable weight calculator
Air freight is billed on the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Enter dimensions and actual weight to see which applies.
These calculators run entirely in your browser, give indicative figures only, and never store your data. Always confirm the exact result on a live quote.
How this calculator works
- Volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 6000, the IATA convention most airlines apply.
- Chargeable weight is the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Light, bulky cargo is billed on volume; dense cargo on the scale.
- This calculator takes one set of dimensions. For a single piece, enter its dimensions and actual weight. For several pieces, either run it once per piece and add the results, or enter the dimensions of the space the whole consignment occupies together with its total actual weight.
Questions about the result
Why is my chargeable weight higher than what the cargo weighs?
Because the cargo is bulky. Below a certain density an airline sells space, not kilograms, and the volumetric figure applies. Packing tighter or removing outer cartons lowers it.
Do all carriers use the 6000 divisor?
Most do, but some lanes and express products use a different divisor, and a quote states the one it applies. Confirm on the quote before comparing offers.
Is the result the price?
No. It is the weight the rate is applied to. The rate itself depends on the lane, the flight, the season and the commodity, which is why this site publishes no prices.
