Shipping from China to Mexico
Our busiest lane, by air and by sea. On this route the paperwork decides the timeline more often than the vessel does — so this page starts with what has to be true before the cargo moves.
A good fit when
- Importers already registered in Mexico, or willing to complete registration before the cargo ships.
- Commercial volumes by air or sea — from a consolidated pallet to full containers and out-of-gauge cargo.
- Buyers who want one counterpart across origin, carriage and the Mexican side rather than three.
Not the right tool when
- Personal effects, courier parcels and anything moving under a simplified regime — a commercial forwarder is the wrong tool and the wrong cost base.
- Anyone who needs a firm landed cost before the tariff classification is agreed. The fracción drives the duty, and a number before it is guesswork.
Before anything ships
The importer of record needs a valid RFC and an active registration in the importers registry the SAT maintains — and "active" is the operative word, because an application in progress is not a registration. Some sectors need a second, sector-specific enrolment on top of it, and that one is discovered late more often than any other item on a Mexican import. Check the classification against the sector list before you book, not after.
By air or by sea
From China to Mexico, air is typically 4–9 days airport to airport, and on the direct Mexico City lanes cargo actually loaded lands the next day, with clearance and delivery after that. Ocean from China runs about 30–45 days port to port to Manzanillo or Lázaro Cárdenas. Both figures exclude the destination side; ask for a shipment-specific door-to-door number when you need a total-chain estimate.
NOM, permits and the tariff line
The fracción arancelaria decides the duty rate, whether a permit applies and whether a Norma Oficial Mexicana applies — so it is not an administrative detail, it is the decision the rest of the file hangs off. Where a NOM applies it usually governs the product and its Spanish-language labelling both, and labelling is the cheapest thing to fix in China and one of the most expensive to fix in a Mexican bonded warehouse.
The documents, and making them agree
Commercial invoice, packing list and transport document travel with almost every shipment, and most holds we see are not a rejection — they are a query, because the three disagree. Same description, same package count, same weights, same consignee spelling. Reading them side by side once takes ten minutes and removes the most common cause of a delay. The printable checklist below is the same list in a form you can hand to a supplier.
Where our responsibility starts and stops
We arrange pickup in China, export handling, the flight or sailing, and — where you want it — Mexican clearance and inland delivery to CDMX, Guadalajara, Monterrey or elsewhere. Clearance is filed by a licensed broker acting for the importer of record. We do not guarantee clearance outcomes, and we will tell you before booking if something about the commodity or the registration means the plan does not work.
We do not publish rates. On these lanes a number published today is wrong within weeks, and a quote that does not ask what the cargo is has guessed at the duty.
Questions we get asked
How long does shipping from China to Mexico take?
From China to Mexico, air is typically 4–9 days airport to airport; from China to Manzanillo or Lázaro Cárdenas, ocean is about 30–45 days port to port. Both exclude pickup, clearance and final delivery, so the door-to-door total is longer, depends on the shipment and address, and must not reuse either interval.
Do I need to be in the Padrón de Importadores?
The importer of record does, and the registration has to be active when the cargo arrives — not merely applied for. Some sectors need an additional enrolment. If you do not have your own local import qualifications, we can assess and arrange a compliant DDP structure; scope, feasibility and importer of record are confirmed per shipment on WhatsApp before booking.
Can you handle customs clearance in Mexico?
We arrange it. Filing is done by a licensed customs broker acting for the importer of record, and the importer authorises that broker electronically — have the authorisation in place before arrival so clearance is not waiting on an administrative step.
