Why can’t I use the full nominal volume?
The gap between nominal and usable CBM comes from how real cargo behaves:
- Packaging shapes. Cartons and crates rarely tessellate perfectly, so there are always voids between and around them.
- Pallet gaps. Standard pallets do not divide evenly into a container’s width, leaving strips of unused floor and headroom above each layer.
- Stacking limits. Fragile, heavy-on-top or non-stackable cargo cannot be loaded to the ceiling, which can cut effective volume sharply.
- Door and access space. Loading and securing cargo needs working clearance you cannot fill.
A sensible planning rule is a loading factor of about 80% of nominal volume. If your cargo is light and stacks cleanly on pallets you may do a little better; if it is bulky, fragile or oddly shaped, plan for less.
